I have a Pat Sloan Crush!

A few weeks ago I was playing with some Bobbins and Bits, the new fabric line by Pat Sloan for Moda Fabrics.  Pat asked me to test out a new pattern using her fabrics and I could not say no to Pat ;o)

So here is Crush!  Great pattern and the colors in this line are so perfect, the grays and oranges...TO LIVE FOR!   I had a great time making this quilt top and would like to do another that I get to keep just for me!  The pattern is easy to follow and it goes together pretty fast, which I love.

To see more ( and there are many more) fabrics in this line visit Pat on youtube.  She has some real eyepoppers!

I made the decision yesterday that this will be the line I am using for my Tula Pink City Sampler Quilt Along that will be starting May 20th hosted on Sew Sweetness!  Hope you will all join us for this event!!!!

Liberty of London pincushion and Bernina attachment praise!

Do you have one of these gray things on your machine and wonder WTH is THAT and why does it POP off all the time?

Jump back to last week, before the snow. I was thinking I wanted to do more practice with free motion quilting and challenge myself to more designs, get more comfortable with the feel and do a real quilt.  I asked some of my quilty friends ( I love them) and Teri Lucas suggested a presser foot that I do not have.  I popped into my local quilt shop Quilt and Sew and talked to Kiki and she showed me what they had available. They did not have the foot I was searching for but they did order it!!!  The other suggestion was this attachment made for the Bernina.  I already have two sets of glasses and was skeptical that this would make a difference, I was WRONG!

That thing is the cover is for this attachment!

The set comes with three different magnification lenses, an adapter and the big gray circle is for hand held use.

It helps SO MUCH!

I have a very very very small stash of Liberty of London charms. I bought some a couple of years ago and then Katy from The Littlest Thistle sent me a bag that she made for me with some more inside last year , AWESOME GIFT!

I wanted to try the new attachment out and decided to make a super cute small New York Beauty pincushion for someone special. This was the perfect way to practice since I needed to use 1/8 in seams on this tiny beauty.  Here is how much clearer it made sewing for me!

I think it turned out PERFECT!

The back is not so perfect but that is because I needed to stuff it a little bit more. I did the paper piecing with Aurifil 50wt and the topstitching with a beautiful 28wt. All the Liberty of London are the yummy lawn fabrics.  I did add a some Pellon Shape -Flex to the back of the top for lots of pin use without damaging the lawn. Shape flex is so light that the feel of the fabric that you are fusing it to remains the same but is gives it some OOMPH!  I will say it again...I LOVE me some MAGIC IN THE MIDDLE!!!!!

I am very happy with my purchase, I love my Bernina!  I hope that my friend will enjoy her pincushion and I look forward to getting my new foot and exploring into the world of free motion quilting with a dhm.

The horrible terrible no good very bad sewing day with a happy #scrappytripalong ending!

I had one of THOSE sewing days a few days ago...

But first, pretty fabric strips which do work into the tale of sewing woe...

It was one of those days alright, in no more than 30 minutes, I broke my feed dog knob on my old Bernina, SOB!

Then I broke my needle

I proceeded to fmq my glove into my quilt...

looks like one single entry but

EEEEEPPPPPP! Thank goodness my finger was spared!!!!!

I was posting these especially cool shots on instagram and was ready to walk away from sewing (for at least an hour) and I saw it!!!!!

Heather's post on a new quilt she was working on and was hooked!!!!  So cool, but did I really need to start something so complicated when obviously I was sewing challenged for the day?  I asked if there was a pattern and she linked me to Lucy and Norman  where there is a It's a Scrappy Sew A Long!!!!! She is using the tutorial on Quiltville  that even I can follow so I was sucked completely in!!!!!

I grabbed some fabric and went to work...not too bad but WRONG!

That was fine,I cut more fabric

When I finished with three I  was feeling the groove

This is how far I have gotten as of this morning. I was going to make pillows but I think I will continue to make a whole quilt. I do think I need a larger design wall!!!!

So go drink the Scrappy Kool-Aide and join in on the fun!!!!

I think this is really it!!!!!

The last day of market ( which was Sat for me) was just as exciting as the first. I think I may have slept seven  hours the entire weekend.  I am feeling it now ;o)

This is one of the most exciting things that happened to me while there.

Lovely...just lovely!!!!!!! I could have moved into this booth and not even needed internet, cable or possibly food...ever! But someone would have had to bring me my Bernina and some Aurifil of course ;o)

EEEEEEEEEP!!!!!!!!!!! Amy Butler has her hands on the Pineapple Princess quilt and she really liked it.  She is so lovely and wonderful. It was great to meet her.  Thank you Amy for taking the time to look at my quilt!!! It is safely home with me and I need to bind it and take final photos :o)

*this photo is from Sara's blog since in mine my eyes are closed since I may have blacked out a bit*

Sara taking photos of the first dress I am going to make!!!!!

And meeting this firecracker Kay Whitt of Serendipity Studio was so much FUN!  All of that charisma and creativity in a fun loving girl from Texas!!!!  I love this lady!!!!!

You cannot walk anywhere here and not run into a fantastic idea or a fabulous person...it is IMPOSSIBLE!

I was on my way to meet up with Sara and I found my nirvana...LIBERTY fabrics...( can you hear the angels singing)!!!!! I fondled some fabric and promised I would return and the gang there was so nice!!!! I am sure they are used to this reaction to all of that loveliness.

When we returned, I was invited to sit down in one of the chairs covered in Liberty fabric ( it somehow seemed a bit naughty but I went along with it) and was speaking to the most wonderful lady. She handed me a box...of LIBERTY swatches...TEARS came to my eyes and I think I may have blacked out for a minute or two because I cannot remember much after that. Is Liberty of London  fabrics THAT good...YES!

Kirstie ( the really nice lady that put up with my moment of weakness) was kind enough to take a photo with me and it is blurry but that is because I am probably still a bit woozy ;o)

This is the box with the fabric! It was in my purse ON the plane for fear of it's safety on the flight home! the new line is called Bloomsbury Gardens . TO LIVE FOR!!!!!

Oliver+s had a very cute booth and I had to get some shots of the really fun projects they had displayed

This is Adam's favorite!

I went back to the Laurie Tigner Design booth ( I was working for her) and who should show up...
Mr. Aurifil! He was out visiting all the booths and saying hello :o)  I am starting to think Alex has a twin ...he is EVERYWHERE!!!!

Right next to our booth was Like Sew, a great group of guys (geeks which in my book means godlike since html is a four letter word to me) that also host the FreeQuiltPatterns.info site. Great group and it was great to meet them!!!!

Here they are with Laurie shoot some footage of how she LOVES them!!!!! Who does not adore a guy that can confidently wear pink and write code ;o) Oohlala!

Art Gallery...oh BABY!!!!!! Soft and lovely and yummy and the most ENERGETIC and FABULOUS group of people! This is the fabric company you want to go to a PARTY with!!!!!

Pat Bravo's Summerlove is one that will be living in my sewing room as soon as I can get my hands on it!!!!

I had to fly to Kansas City to meet this talented lady even though I only live one hour from her...

Pat Sloan in her really cool dress in front of her new fabric line Eat Your Fruits and Veggies!!!

Next to Pat Sloan was another person that was on my list to meet ( Amy Lou Who said I had to hug her) Vanessa Christenson of V&Co. I was so happy when I saw her and warned her I was going to give her a hug from Amy and she said okay, then I told her my name was Kim and she looked at my tag and said..."OH! you are THAT Kim!" Not sure if that was good or bad she hugged me again and I was super happy her ninjas did not jump me!!!! Yes, she had her own set of personal ninjas and they were in some of my photos  although I cannot show them( ninjas cannot ever reveal their true identity).

Amy, I REALLY hugged her but Sara has the photo and I will post it as soon as I get it from her!!!!!

I found someone that was not quilting but KNITTING at market...I thought that was so cool and well, she was doing a great job!

I saw her again at the KCMQG!!!! And she gave me a prize ( see that Robert Kauffman fabric ;o), she gave that to me!!!) !!!!

I was searching all over for her and she is NOT Sewing Athena ( I googled it every way possible)  but Spinning Athena multi talented and very nice :o)

So with blistered and bandaged toes...

and a head full of ideas, I sadly said goodbye to Kansas City and all the wonderful people I met there.

Thank you Kansas City, International Quilt Market, designers, bloggers and everyone else! It was fun!!!!

View Master block {tutorial}

What started a months ago as just an idea is now a tutorial! I hope you make and enjoy this fun little block as much as I do!

There are three pages to print out for this tutorial.

Page One has four Part A/ Part B print one of these.  Page Two has three Part A/ Part B and one Part C.  Template C is for the circles that you will need to place the circle in the block. Why use a compass if you don't have to!

For the viewmaster reel you will need:

1 heptagon center cut, 56 1.5x3in pieces,  and 14 2x2 (approx size) center cuts.

Cut the paper pieces from Page One and Page Two out. The Part A and B will be cut down the center. The seam allowance for the center line will be added later.

For the outer section of the block you will need a 12.5 in square of fabric,  12 in square of freezer paper, a glue stick and a small piece of poster board.

Please read all the instructions first before starting the block.

Put the fabric and paper up to the light so you can center your fussy cut right in the middle

Place the 2x1.5 solid fabric right sides facing and making sure you have enough of an overlap for 1/4 in seam

Sew between 1 and 2 on the line

fold the line over

and trim your 1/4 in seam. I am fortunate enough to have a small table right next to my machine, you can also trim this with scissors so you do not have to get up  ;o)

Place your next solid on top

flip and sew line between 1 and 3

flip over side and trim

If you have read any of my past paper piecing tutorials, I feel more comfortable prefolding and pretrimming.

Take a metal ruler and prefold lines 4 and 5

with the fabric open I fold the paper and trim to 1/4 in

Flip back over and place the next solid on the top

Sew line between 1 and 4

On the 4 and 5 lines you will sew to the end of the line and then do a securing back stitch

Now add 5

Again use a securing backstitch and sew line between one and five

Ta  Da!!!!!

Make one part A and one part B

On the inner section where you made the securing stitch, make sure to add a 1/4 in seam allowance. This is the only side you will have to add the seam allowance.  The seam allowance is already added  to the other sides.  Trim other sides.

Tear your paper off

When you have a Part A and Part B completed line them up...

This is not the correct alignment

 This one is :o)

Take a Part A and  a Part B and line the window tops and bottoms up, pin

and sew them together

Iron the seam open and this what your first section will look like! Can I hear and Awwwwww, how cute,LOL!  Make sure when you put the sections together that is is flat at the bottom as shown here.

Make six more of these sections using the same method above. When you have finished all seven sections. Place them how you would like them. If you will take notice of what happens when you sew the Part A and Part B together incorrectly lots of seam ripping! Don't be like Go-Go Kim...make flat bottom A and B connections ;o)

Again line up the center windows

Sew together

and you will have this dresden looking circle

Iron all the seams open

Cut a piece of poster board about 2 inches and draw a 1/4 in line across board.

Iron all sides down using the 1/4 in board as a guide. A spritz of sizing helps to keep it in place

Line the hept up and pin it in place.  You may have to spin it a couple of times to find the right spot. Pin at the lines to match up.

Sew it down. I used the inside of my 1/4 in seam foot

The method I used for the next section uses freezer paper.  Laurie Tigner told me about it and I could not be MORE pleased with the results there is one here and there is another here . I based mine on the second link but the first is great to have on hand!  It is BRILLIANT and makes a perfect circle with NO PINNING!   I am not going to re-do all of their fantastic work but will give you a couple of shots of how easy this was for me and if I can do it, I KNOW you can too!!!! I did not have the white school glue so I had to use my handy dandy glue stick and it seemed to work  :o)

Take your circle print out ( Page 3)  and your freezer paper.  The outer circle should measure 6 3/4 diameter.  Cut the freezer paper into a 12 in square and the fabric 12.5in  ( for my mini I made it a little different sized).  I found the center of the freezer paper and cut out the larger circle. Placed my freezer paper shiny side down and ironed. The smaller inner circle of the print out is the 1/2 in from the outer circle so you can use that cut out for a guide if you need it.

Find the center of the 12 in square freezer paper and draw your lines ( sorry for the bad lighting this was at 6am)

Center your print out circle and draw your alignment lines. Then draw your circle
Cut out your circle.

The one thing that was different was I placed the reel on the fabric, I flipped it to check the spacing and pinned it into place before gluing it on.

After you have sewn the reel into the circle ( using the methods in the links) you can add your special touches. Using disappearing marker, I marked what I thought I would like to see on the block.  I used my machine since I need to practice my hand sewing skills.

Make many blocks for a bigger quilt or just make a mini!!!!! I chose to make a mini...this time :o) I can see a whole quilt of this being VERY fun!

I was so happy when some Aurifil thread showed up at my door JUST in time for quilting!!!! I was very concerned since the Bernina is now a bit of a snob when it come to thread :o)  I tried the Pellon 50% cotton/ 50% soy batting and I am very impressed. I cannot wait to see how it works in some of the bigger projects I am doing.

I hope you will have fun making this block and I hope that this tutorial is very helpful :o)  If you have any question please send me an email to mygogolife@yahoo.com and I will be happy to help any way I can.

I respectfully request that this pattern be for personal use only.
