and the next one...

Sharing yet another of my projects for my DT submission for American Crafts.
I painted then covered a Kaiser Craft wooden robot with Amy Tangerine pattern papers. I removed the back of the frame to leave it clear then added some coloured bulldog clips to hold my photos.

Mini Turkey and Zucchini Burgers with Creamy Sumac Dipping Sauce

These Mini Turkey and Zucchini Burgers are exploding with flavor (zucchini, green onions, mint, cilantro, garlic, cumin and cayenne).  In addition to their wonderful flavor, these burgers are also incredibly moist.  In fact, the mixture was so moist I had to add breadcrumbs in order to shape the patties.

These burgers are tasty all on their own, but they are absolutely addictive when paired with this refreshing and creamy sumac dipping sauce.  For those of you who have not tried sumac, it is a bright red spice that is popular in Middle Eastern cooking.  Sumac is usually described as sour, but I don't feel like that's a positive or accurate description.  I would describe sumac as a colorful, bright, and refreshing spice that is reminiscent of citrus.  I'm crazy for the bright red color and the special zip it adds to dishes.

I took some liberties with the recipe for the sumac dipping sauce.  Originally, the dip was made with a base of sour cream and Greek yogurt.  I don't care for sour cream so I decided to sub mayonnaise in place of the sour cream/yogurt base.  My substitution worked perfectly and the recipe below reflects my change.  I will, however, add a special note for those of you who might like to try the recipe as it was written, with the sour cream/yogurt base.

Mini Turkey & Zucchini Burgers with Creamy Sumac Dipping Sauce
Adapted from Jerusalem by Yotam Ottolenghi & Sami Tamimi
Makes about 18 burgers (serves 4-6)

1 pound ground turkey
2 cups grated zucchini
3 green onions, thinly sliced
about 1/2 cup panko or breadcrumbs
1 large egg
2 tablespoons chopped mint
2 tablespoons chopped cilantro
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 tablespoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
about 6-1/2 tablespoons canola oil, for searing

Creamy Sumac Dipping Sauce
heaping 1/2 cup mayo
1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice
1 small clove garlic, minced
1-1/2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon sumac
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper

Note: This recipe was originally written to include a scant 1/2 cup sour cream plus a scant 2/3 cup Greek yogurt.  If you'd prefer this option then simply omit the mayo in the above recipe and replace it with the sour cream and Greek yogurt.  All other ingredients remain the same.

First make the creamy sumac sauce by placing all the ingredients in a small bowl.  Stir well and set aside or chill until needed.

Preheat the oven to 425F.  In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients for the burgers except the canola oil.  Mix with your hands and then shape into about 18 patties/burgers, each weighing about 1-1/2 ounces.

Pour enough canola oil into a large frying pan to form a layer about 1/16 inch on the pan bottom.  Heat over medium heat until hot, then sear the burgers in batches on all sides.  Cook each batch for about 4 minutes, adding oil as needed, until golden brown.

Carefully transfer the seared burgers to a baking sheet or cast iron skillet, as I've done here, and place in the oven for 5-7 minutes, or until just cooked through.  Serve warm or at room temperature, with the sauce spooned over on the side.

A Fusion with Royalty: O Holy Night

Usually I find a challenge that I like to play, then I scrounge around in my craft corner until I find stamps and dies that will work.  Today, I decided to do it all backwards because I absolutely have to deal with an overflowing box of stamps-that-will-not-be-put-away-until-they-see-ink.  I came up with a Christmas set by Verve that has a wonderful look to the sentiments.  It's a beautiful set called Peace on Earth (sadly, when I went to find the link I saw that it was sold out until the end of August!)   Then I went scrounging for challenges.

First, I saw Stampin' Royalty's Christmas In July challenge.  I was definitely heading in the right direction for that one.  Then I saw Fusion.  The sketch had a perfect space to showcase the sentiment and the inspiration photo gave me colors and the stars.  A perfect fusion!!

O Holy Night

I'm not in terrible shape for Christmas cards so far this year, but I could definitely be in better shape. Last year was the one and only year that I was ever ahead - and it felt so good.  I'm trying to remember that feeling every time that I sit down at my craft table so I can get motivated - it's probably going to start looking more like Christmas on this blog!!

Anything But Sweet...A Review and Giveaway!!

Hi There, So right off the bat I need to mention that I received this "sweet" paperback as part of a huge bundle of goodies in July (yes July, don't judge) From Avon! I got a huge box filled with book goodies because I am an AVON ADDICT:) You can see my badge over there on the right hand side bar:)

Anyway, I digress, majorly...Among all of those goodies, was a few copies of this little gem! I chose to read this one first! I just loved this the moment I started reading it:) Here is the premise:

Welcome to Candis Terry’s Sweet, Texas, a sexy new contemporary series where the wild Wilder brothers find love in a town that, despite its name, is anything but sweet...

War and the deaths of loved ones have changed Ex-marine Reno Wilder’s attitude. Now this military man is ready to settle down into a calmer life. So when Sweet is chosen as a destination for a makeover TV show, he’s less than pleased about the potential disruption to his routine.

Headstrong show host and designer Charlotte Brooks arrives in Sweet ready to change everything, including Reno. Locked in a face-off neither saw coming, will they be able to find common ground and realize that a life together could be sexy…and also very sweet?

I know, right!?!

Now, here is an excerpt:

At the moment they may be like fire and gasoline, but something in his eyes said Reno Wilder was a man worth fighting for. And Charlotte's heart was more than willing to take a chance.
His gaze swept her face, lingered on her mouth, then came back up to her eyes and held. His thick dark lashes lowered on a slow blink. When she thought her heart would knock through her ribcage, he cupped her face with his strong hands, lowered his head, and brushed her mouth with his warm lips.
"I'm sorry you had to fight for your Father's attention"He whispered against her mouth. "But you definitely have mine"Then he kissed her so slow and sweet she thought her hammering heart would shatter.

OK, that's enough! If you want to read the rest you have to buy the book...or win it here...all you have to do is leave a "sweet" comment...Prizes will be drawn on Friday August 16, 2013!

Oh, my review...Well, I said already that I really loved it as soon as I started it. It is a quick, fun, sweet read. Did I say fun? This is a Beach read for sure and I do look forward to reading the rest of the books in the series...I have to find out what the rest of the brothers are up to! If you are looking for a deep, intellectual kind of book this is not for you...but there are plenty of those out there...this one is pure love and fun and tortured hero...So...
It's a

For this little gem!

A Very Special Baby Girl

I bet everybody reading this knows Melissa over at Oh, Smudge! and from CASology.  Melissa has added a sweet baby girl to her wonderful family of three charming little gentlemen.  I first met Melissa as part of the first Dynamic Duos design team.  She went on to create CASology - one of the best challenges out there!  I love following her blog.  She's a wonderful cardmaker but she also offers little glimpses into her life with her Wordless Wednesday and her Happiness Is posts on Sundays.  CASology is hosting a baby shower for Melissa and little Bryna Kate.

Congratulations Melissa!!

CAS(E) this Sketch! You are the Best!

This is my second post today.  Curtain Call is just a short scroll away.

It's time for a new sketch at CAS(E) this Sketch!  I really like this one and you can see that I stuck to it almost exactly.

You Are the Best 2

There are a number of different products from Simon Says Stamp on this card.  You all know that I like many, many companies. One of my "criterion" (beyond just loving their style) is that things work together.  In this case Simon Says Stamp came out with the floral stamps set which is absolutely darling.  A month or so later - they came out with dies.  The "you" is a die that coordinates with the You stamp set.  The stamp set comes with multiple styles of stamped "you" also - but you can add the diecut instead.  The banner comes from All-Occasion banners which also has a stamp set just full of sentiments that fit inside.  So multiple sets and multiple dies - but it all works!!

With all of the Simon Say Stamp product, I'm also adding this to their current Anything Goes challenge.

I hope you are inspired by this sketch and play along!!  Remember...there is flexibility allowed...you will have to check out the rest of the design team cards to really see how much flexibility and creativity there is in a sketch.

Curtain Call: Hang in There

Thanks to all of you who made the first ever Curtain Call challenge a huge success.  And if you didn't get a chance to play along, today's another day with our next challenge!!

The sponsor for this challenge is Fresh Squeezed Stamps.  The prize is your choice of a stamp set!  It's definitely worth your time to play along!

I have to admit that I had a huge wishlist of Fresh Squeezed Stamps but hadn't ordered anything yet.  So this was my excuse to order (as if I need an excuse!!)  I got all the sets on my wishlist and then one last set jumped into my cart.  It's called String Me Along and contains this very unique, but very fun variety of images - a high-topped tennis shoe, a baby onesie AND...Chinese lanterns which I thought were just perfect for the party image above!

Hang in There

You will LOVE all of the inspiration from the design team.  There are some with watermelons, others used the feathers, some focused on the colors - it's an amazing variety and will most definitely give you ideas and inspiration.  Check it out at Curtain Call.  The challenge is open until August 10th - I hope you play along!
