Clown Wishes in Neon

Under the heading of "what was I thinking?" I purchased the new Hero Arts Neon Inks.  What in the world does a conservative stamper like me do with neon?  Surround it with neutrals!

Clown Wishes

I kind of like it this way.  Neon is so, so scary bright - just the little bit on this card totally pops!!

I used the colors from The Play Date Cafe (although they didn't specific neon!)

And I used the Mojo Monday sketch - but vertically.

  • Stamps: The Alley Way Stamps Admit One, "Wish" from Christmas Magic
  • Paper: Stampin' Up Crumb Cake
  • Ink: Hero Arts Neon Pink, Yellow and Orange, Stampin' Up Crumb Cake
  • Accessories: Cuttlebug Charles folder, twine, clear Dew Drops plopped on punched circles rubbed with neon

Sweet 'n Sassy April New Release Hop

Welcome to the Sweet 'n Sassy Stamps April New Release Celebration!  All of the Design Divas are excited to kick things off today with a fun blog hop full of inspiration using the sets that will be available for purchase in the store tonight.  Ready to get started?

You have probably comes from Dina's blog (aren't those Calla Lilies absolutely amazing!)  If you started with me, you might want to head back to the starting point on the Sweet 'n Sassy Stamps Blog.

This owl has to have the cutest expression that I have ever seen...

The set is called "Owl Be Here" and includes seven fun sentiments!

The second stamp that I got is called "Flower Field".  My original plan was to use the field of flowers behind the owl, which I still think is a great idea but my cards for today didn't quite work that way.  So I took part of the image (the actual image is not quite 4" x 4") and put together these little scenes...

Did you notice the grass on the owl card and the fence on this card?  Another new release item - a very useful set of dies!!

Next on the hop is Melisa.  Have fun!

Here's the full list of Design Divas (and our special April Guest) sharing their creativity with you today:

Make plans to join us tonight over in our member company forums on Splitcoaststampers for our New Release Party!  We'll have full reveals of each fabulous stamp set, fellowship and chatter with friends, fun challenges, and more!  Also.....did you know today is Korin's birthday?!  Isn't that fun?  To celebrate, Sweet 'n Sassy Stamps will be giving away a $34 gift certificate to the store.  l you have to do is leave Korin some birthday wishes over on this photo on the Sweet 'n Sassy Stamps Facebook page.

I used two sketch challenges for my cards:

Confirmation Weekend with Mojo

This upcoming weekend is the big weekend for our 8th graders being confirmed (an affirmation of their baptism).  They read their faith statements at two of our church services and are confirmed at the third.  There is an Evening of Honor Saturday night for which I had made this set of invitations.  I also made many other cards for the members of our congregation to choose from and give to the confirmands.

Then I needed to mass produce some cards for the church to give to the confirmands, but I was fresh out of ideas.  Confirmation cards are the hardest cards for me to make.  They are for teenagers but they are for a formal occasion - those don't always go together!  Also, there are very few stamps specific to the occasion.

Luckily, the Mojo Monday sketch came up and I knew instantly that I was using it for these cards.  I think that the notched panel gave it a formal look as befitting this occasion.

My color choices were easy - these are the colors of our sanctuary.  (I do hope that the kids - or at least the parents of the kids - get the connection!)  I chose stamps that aren't specific to "confirmation" but at least make an appropriate statement.

I really took the sketch seriously - see the background on the sketch - here it is on my card!

There are a few more layers here than I would normally like to use for a mass-produced card, but cutting is an easy task.  There are no fancy techniques, just a little woodgrain texture on the background and I am done.

  • Stamps: Verve Artful Elegance background, Our Daily Bread sentiment, Clear Dollar Stamps small cross
  • Ink: Papertrey Ink Dark Chocolate
  • Paper: Stampin' Up Creamy Caramel, Bravo Burgundy, Papertrey Pinefeather
  • Accessories: Stampin' Up Burgundy grosgrain, Papertrey Woodgrain Impression Plate, misc gem colored with copics

Grocery Bag Flowers

We have a weed along the trail that I take for my regular walks, that I think is absolutely gorgeous.  It looks like a soft, crumpled paper.

I have a bag of jelly beans in a grocery bag stashed under my desk.  The bag is getting very wrinkled as I pile stuff on it to hide it (my family has figured out that I often have a stash of sweets).  As I was digging in the bag this morning, I realized that that crumpled grocery bag could work for this flower (and for The Paper Players challenge challenge to recycle!!)

Since this idea occurred to me while I was pulling stuff out to do the Splitcoast Color Challenge of Poppy, Baja and Pear - I didn't do my imagined earth-toned card reminiscent of a field of weeds - but I like how the brighter colors offset my white flower.

To get the flowers, I used my flower dies to cut two large white flowers, then I layered on three large grocery bag flowers and then three small grocery bag flowers.

Apparently I was not at my most creative this morning, because this card actually uses a sketch challenge too.  (Usually I try to have something of my own on each card - but this card uses somebody else's sketch, colors, and recycling idea!!??)  The sketch is from Mojo Monday.

For those of you that like to shop after doing your blog-reading (or is that just me??) - I have to highly recommend the sentiment set from this card.  It's called Big Wish by Verve Stamps.  It is definitely one of my go-to sets as it includes a wide variety of small to mid-size birthday sentiments.  They are all very unique, but some use basic fonts, some have a cute frill and some are very elegant.

Verve Stamps are very high quality clear stamps.  (I did a rant recently about cheap clear stamps.  Cheap stamps are "squishy" and it's really difficult to get a image.)  I had a conversation recently with someone who does NOT like clear stamps and it occurred to me that I should share two tips with you (just in case any of you feel the same.)

1. Be sure you have some sort of pad when you are stamping.  Picture a basic wood-mount stamp - there is the wood, then some foam, then the rubber.  I actually unmount all of my wood stamps, right down to the rubber, so I have no foam.  I need to have it somewhere, so I place a piece of foam under the paper on which I am stamping.  The same concept applies to acrylic stamps - you need foam for that little bit of "give" that allows you to get a good image.

I use Darice's Rubber Stamp Pad - it's a large red foam pad that I have found at Joann's and at Michael's.  FYI: I cut mine in half.  A cheap piece of fun foam works the same way.  If you have ever used Close To My Heart's acrylic stamps, they come packaged with a piece of foam and, if you read the instructions, it tells you to put the foam under the paper!

2. If your image comes out mottled - not crisp and clear - the stamp you are using may have a factory coating on it that is messing with the ink.  Some people recommend that you do the following steps for every clear stamp, but I find that very few need it.  To get rid of the factory coating, you can either:

     a. Rub the stamp with a good quality white eraser.
          OR
     b. Ink, stamp on scratch paper, clean stamp
               - repeat once or twice until you get a good crisp image.

I think that if you keep these two things in mind, you will find that you are more willing to work with clear stamps!

Flower of the Month: March

When I saw this mornings Pals Paper Arts color challenge, I knew that I wanted those soft colors on my March Flower of the Month card.

The earlier Flower of the Month cards can be found by clicking on Special Post: SU Flowers of the Month in the Card Categories on the right side of this page.  I changed this one up a little by using a circle in the center of the square Happy Birthday Frame.

I also needed an embellishment per the Mojo Monday sketch - so added the punched flower and the tag that has the March birthstone.
