Aussie Christmas...

A few months ago I was asked to co-ordinate a new DT and blog for X-Press It adhesives and scrapbooking products. I gladly said yes and today is my first post on the blog. I have posted some tips and tricks about using their double sided tape, I hope you can pop on over and check them out here.
There is also a competition to win some product as well as a chance to win a GDT spot as well. All the details are on the blog.....I hope you can join in!
So here is my layout I created.... trying to get a good useable photo for our Christmas card this year was very very difficult...I ended up taking some in our pool and I loved the outcome!
Gorgeous vellum and banner rubons from Hambly.

Till next time...

sweet moments and scripture advent download

My experience has been, that recognizing and being grateful for those sweet and simple moments that touch our hearts is what makes life most meaningful and memorable. You can't make them happen, they just do. And you smile, offer a little prayer of thanks, take a picture with your heart, and know. And then they happen even more often. That's why I love Christmas so much. It's filled to the brim with opportunities to find and cherish those little moments.

I purchased this Fisher-Price nativity collection for the girls this year.

They love it and play with it often.

Madi had it all to herself a couple of weeks ago and I watched her hold the baby Jesus in her little hands and just look at him. I wondered what she was thinking until she asked me, "Grandma, is this 'a child of God'?" It was one of those sweet little moments when you want so much to say just the right thing. I simply replied, "Yes, that is Jesus and he is a child of God, and so are you."

I know that each December as I unpack the Little People nativity, I'll remember that moment.

Last year Ella went with our friends the Lindleys, to a live nativity up the road in Alpine, Utah. She talked about it all year and really wanted to go again, so we added it to our activities advent list. We took both girls this past weekend. Ella felt so important being the "leader" and showing us how things worked and where to go.

We walked up the hill with Roman soldiers on horses directing us that "all are to be counted." We walked through Bethlehem and saw live camels, llamas and donkeys. We met the three wise men who told us the significance of each of the gifts they gave to the infant Jesus. And we watched actors work with leather, metal and wool.

As we sipped hot cocoa, we walked to another barn where a quartet in the loft was playing Christmas music. I knew what was coming and the emotion began to surface. We were just outside the door and could hear a sweet newborn crying. I didn't even try to hold back the tears. The sight that welcomed us was so beautiful--Mary, Joseph and the newborn babe wrapped in swaddling clothes. It was so noisy outside, but in that humble little room in the corner of a barn, it was quiet, and everyone spoke in whispers.

I watched the sweet couple as they tried to comfort the crying baby. I could feel their anxiousness as their efforts, at first, were unsuccessful. And I realized, as first-time parents, Mary and Joseph would have had those same feelings. I took in the surroundings and felt humbled. It was a sweet moment witnessed and it brought the scripture account in the New Testament of the birth of our Savior to life.

I mentioned last year that one of the things I loved most about the Christmas season, was crawling into bed each night and reading a series of scriptures that followed of the life of Christ. I looked forward to that time and enjoyed feeling the Spirit as I read.

The list of scripture accounts is from a scripture advent our primary leaders handed out to each child to read with their family. It's a good one. I wanted my older children to have the same list, so I created a more "grown up" version just for them. (Truth be told, I also had a hard time reading the other versions--yes, this was the year for bi-focals and I love them!). If you'd like your own copy, download here. I know it's a little late, but you can easily catch up. (The original was found on Sugardoodle, taken from the December 2008 issue of the Friend magazine.)

I hope your Christmas season is filled with many sweet moments.

Komen In OC!!

That is the little Pink Tree decorating the little bar where we had our meeting to kick off the planning of the first ever Ocean City, Maryland RFTC! Several of us from the Baltimore, Maryland RFTC traveled down to OC to mentor any of the volunteers that wanted to do our specific jobs but in OC...Well, we had an absolute blast...We are a crazy bunch! We played we shopped, we shopped, and we laughed and laughed!

Such great fun was had by all!!
We have decided that what happens in OC stays in OC...
I sure hope we get to do it again...
Thanks to Lenore for her wonderful hospitality...

Twine, Unique Colors and a Gift Sketch

I generally don't put more than a couple of challenges together - I'm just not talented enough to see which ones work well together!  But today, I saw the CAS Challenge at Splitcoast (use twine) and I remembered the Stamping 411 Sketch which looked like a gift.  Then, as I was scrounging through my Christmas papers for a center panel for the gift sketch, I came across a pack of paper from Stampin' Up then I had not even opened - probably because it had very nontraditional colors - just like was required by this week's Paper Players Challenge!

  • Stamps: Stampin' Up Just Beclause
  • Paper: Stampin' Up Blushing Bride, Candy Cane Christmas dsp
  • Ink: Stampin' Up Basic Gray, copics
  • Accessories: misc baker's twine, Stampin' Up Oval Punch

Freshly Made and colourQ: Reindeer and Ornaments

I like to play along with Freshly Made Sketches as often as possible.  They have a requirement that the card be "clean" - not necessarily simple - and that is exactly my style.

With this week's sketch, I pictured Christmas ornaments.  Then I decided to go a unique direction and pair it withe blues in this week's colourQ challenge.

That's when things started getting out of control!!  Wouldn't the background look nice with some white, sparkly spritz.  Then I should sponge the edges.  Then I needed to add some glitter to the top of each ornament because of the snow.  And pretty soon this card was out of my personal definition of  "clean"!  But I LOVE it - it's one of my favorite Christmas cards this year.

I spritzed it with Mr. Huey's sprays - both Calico White and Calico Shine.

Here's the sketch....
Here's the colors...

So I decided that I wouldn't be posting that card for Freshly Made and I had to make another.  I'm going to show you both of them in this post so you can see how wildly different cards can be made with the same sketch.  (I recently read a blog post...not one of my faithful followers/commenters so no one take offense...that stated how much she hated sketch challenges because they were so limiting.)  Limiting??!!  Check out this card and see how "limited" that I was...

An entirely different look, isn't it??

The reindeer is from an old Stampin' Up set called Holiday Sampler.  I found it when I was rummaging around for a sentiment for the first card - it was literally dusty!!  So I simply had to use it.

I ran a glue pen around the edge of each piece and dipped it glitter for a subtle shine.

Of course, any one who dislikes sketch challenges is obviously wrong...but it's OK that I really dislike inspiration challenges!!

THREE ORNAMENTS:
  • Stamps: Stampin' Up Oh My Word (ornament), Season of Joy (sentiment)
  • Paper: Stampin' Up Whisper White, Sahara Sand, Marina Mist
  • Ink: Stampin' Up Night of Navy, Marina Mist, Bashful Blue, Sahara Sand, Colorbox Frost White
  • Accessories: Mr. Huey Calico White and Calico Shine, Martha Stewart snowflake border punch, Stampin' Up Marina Mist Taffeta, sparkly twine and Decorative Ornament Punch (just the top)
RUDOLPH AND HIS PALS:
  • Stamps: Stampin' Up Holiday Sampler, Teeny Tiny Wishes
  • Paper: Stampin' Up Garden Green, Frostwood Lodge dsp, Red Glitter Paper
  • Ink: Stampin' Up Soft Suede, Crumb Cake, Cherry Cobbler
  • Accessories: Stampin' Up Cherry Twine, Garden Green Grosgrain, Oval punch, border punch, label and modern label punch, Cuttlebug snowflake folder
